Ah...France in May!
Hey Lisa...darlin', tho I'm
shootin' up a storm in France, Spain and
Germany (photos of course) I always feel close to home when near a
computer and can read AHNC. While my friends over here all read Atwitsend and
share my beliefs, I do get a sense of 'charming pity' from them
sometimes.
I had a seriously awkward experience last week sitting around after
dinner talking about politics and other matters with a group of friends,
Dutch, French, English and the TV was in the background. None of us were
paying it much attention until someone noticed images of the torture
from Abu Ghraib being shown. The narration was in Dutch. The room fell
eerily silent as the images continued, this time with little and then no
narration..just image after image after image. I was glued to the
set...glued to my seat. I was finally aware that I was barely breathing and
that my hands hurt from clenching my fists so tightly.
And the room was deadly silent. And while I was focused on the images, I
was also becoming aware of the stares aimed at me from my friends. I
didn't sense any animosity from them, however. I didn't sense much at all
I guess because I was feeling way too ashamed and way to enraged.
I have never felt so isolated as an American. Here I was all alone on
foreign soil, a proud citizen of America..a proud American who has never
felt ashamed of my country and its ideals and nobility; I've never felt
the need to ever be silent in my criticism of my government and its
follies and atrocities and horrific failings throughout its history. What
has made my proud has been our willingness to always confront our
shortcomings and just rush headlong into staring them down and doing
something about them, goddamit!! That's what we do and it's not always pretty.
But this, this last 3 years under Bush and his Gang of thugs and this
final horror of prisoner torture...and the subsequent silence from those
Great Christians like Falwell and Robertson et al...and the
cheerleading from the Right Wing Media has made me ashamed and enraged.
And to sit as the sole American in a room full of friends..sympathetic
friends..and witness what this Gang of F*cks has done in my beloved
country's name is indescribable. I'm trying to describe it, Lisa, but I
can't. I just can't. I've never felt that way in my life.
I just hope that Kerry gets it right and doesn't run from his great off
the cuff character remarks ('Maybe his training wheels fell off) and
try to always look so f*cking serious.
I know I'm rambling here. I've witnessed a lot of interesting things
and met a number of fine folks over here in the last several weeks. I
purposely didn't take my iBook just so I would concentrate on staying in
the moment with taking pictures and having conversations with many
different people. And it's working so far. But it's really good to read your
great site and keep in touch with your sanity and humour.
I'll call you when I get back, and of course, there'll be tons of new
images up on the site.
Long Live AHNC and At Wits Eng!!!
Bob
You might be a right wing republican if...you don't
understand why any one would want to be in Paris in the spring.
I am eager to see your photos. I need to view some
beauty after weeks of torture photos.
Oddly enough, the scenario you described about viewing the torture photos with
your European friends was not the first I heard. Yesterday, my southern belle
girlfriend Meg called. Her teenage son and his girlfriend have been traveling
around Europe on the Euro Rail pass. (Gawd, to be young and in love AND in
Europe!) I digress--Her son said, "the war and torture photos are everywhere but
Europeans are so civilized that they know the difference between Bush and the
rest of America." Wow. Out of the mouth of babes.
I miss your commentary and I miss your deep Democratic voice.
AHNC and www.atwitsend.org
forever!
Take care.

Lisa,
What I cannot understand is why a big toughass Texas Cowboy like Bush was
wearing a helmet and mouthpiece while riding a bike on his Chicken Ranch.
I've lived in the country all my life and out here only children use these
items.

I was also wandering if little George tore her skirt when that big bad bike
