The Last Refuge
New York Times - By Paul Krugman

In 1944, millions of Americans were engaged in desperate battles across the world. Nonetheless, a normal presidential election was held, and the opposition didn't pull its punches: Thomas Dewey, the Republican candidate, campaigned on the theme that Franklin Roosevelt was a "tired old man." As far as I've been able to ascertain, the Roosevelt administration didn't accuse Dewey of hurting morale by questioning the president's competence. After all, democracy — including the right to criticize — was what we were fighting for.

Kerry Accuses GOP of 'Fake Patriotism' in Flap
Common Dreams - Apr 6, 2003
The Massachusetts lawmaker, in turn, accused GOP leaders Friday of purposely distorting a tongue-in-cheek remark and vowed "not to be silenced by their fake-patriotism argument."

Kerry: Democracy Means He Can Criticize
WCVB-TV, MA UPDATED: 6:58 a.m. EDT April 8, 2003
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Presidential candidate John Kerry said Monday that democracy affords rival Democrats the right to criticize President George Bush, even with the nation at war.

Today's cartoon was inspired by the continuing republican attacks on our war veterans.  Senator Kerry is the latest of a long list of republican smear attempts. At least the GOP doesn't limit criticism to Democrats -- remember Senator John McCain POW's status during Vietnam being attacked by the George W. Bush supporters. The most despicable attack of all was done to Max Cleland of Georgia -- the triple amputee Vietnam veteran's patriotism was attacked.  It worked, Cleland lost to chickenhawk Saxby Chambliss last November. Can anyone name a Democrat who questioned any veteran's patriotism? I'd like to know.

Another Bomb Saddam Song- Calypso beat  http://www.snickerplanet.com/

'Bomb Saddam' song makes waves online
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A radio station is making waves again on the Internet ( www.snickerplanet.com )with a tune mocking Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. The calypso-rhythmed Bomb Saddam Song was produced by the same Las Vegas radio hosts whose Bin Laden Bomb Song drew international attention after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. The new two-minute cartoon has Saddam sunning himself in a desert, when explosions start and tanks move in while U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell sings, "Hey, Saddam, your tyranny is done."

Aren’t there any Americans left, willing or able to oppose the lunatics leading them to certain ruin?
