GOP pulled no punches in struggle for Medicare bill
November 27, 2003 BY ROBERT NOVAK SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST ...On the House floor, Nick Smith was told business interests would give his son $100,000 in return for his father's vote. When he still declined, fellow Republican House members told him they would make sure Brad Smith never came to Congress. After Nick Smith voted no and the bill passed, Duke Cunningham of California and other Republicans taunted him that his son was dead meat... |

Bribery on the House of Representative's floor--how republican. This story was buried (Nov.24), I just ran across it while building today's edition.
Let an investigation begin--but don't hold your breath.

Money and Medicine
By Dan Tyler
A recent headline in the local daily caught my attention: “Flu Outbreak May Be Shot In The Arm For Hospital Profits.” The article appeared on the business page and thus had a pro-business slant, as in, the more people get sick and the sicker they get the more money for HCA, the world’s largest for-profit hospital chain and one of Nashville’s biggest employers.

Dan's column is a peek into Tennessee bad boys. A must read.

I caught Linda Tripp in a lie! "There seems to be the sense that I was a vast right-wing conspirator, yet five years later I think it should be clear, I never took a cent. I never made a cent on the notoriety. I didn't write a book. It wasn't for self-enrichment. And it never was. And it still isn't." -Linda Tripp on Larry King click here for full transcript Click here for Linda Tripp's own website asking for donations |
Unless no one has donated to Linda on her own website, she lied on Larry King last night.
EXCERPT FROM LARRY KING LIVE
CALLER: I was wondering,
was your life ever threatened for revealing the truth about the Clinton-Monica
Lewinsky affair?
LINDA TRIPP: Yes, repeatedly. And in fact, threats were made on the lives of
my children as well.
KING: You received a threat, Allison?
ALLISON TRIPP: It was actually left on my father's answering machine.
KING: A threat of harming you?
ALLISON TRIPP: Yeah. Yes.
LINDA TRIPP: Yes.
KING: Did you report it?
ALLISON TRIPP: I don't know.
Allison doesn't know whether a threat on her life was reported to authorities? WTF?

SUBJECT: Foot in Mouth Award
Hi Lisa,
Its those British again !
The Campaign for Plain English is well known here. It tries to
highlight anyone or anything guilty of gobbledygook in insurance policies,
conditions of sale, official documents and particularly public figures who
deliberately (or otherwise) make confusing statements. Not since the fondly
remembered, multi sylable General Alexander Haig, has there been top ranking
Americans figuring so prominently in these high profile "foot in the mouth"
awards. You can see it all at:
http://www.plainenglish.co.uk/pressrelease.html#Anchor-Donal-1943
Basically Rummy defeated Arnie's "I think that gay marriage is
something that should be between a man and a woman". With his "'Reports that say
that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me, because as we
know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know
there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do
not know. But there are also unknown unknowns — the ones we don't know we
don't know".
Dubya often gets mentioned as a prime candidate for "foot in the mouth
awards, but this year its Rummy who has got the top honour.
Your pal from England
Alan
Hi Alan,
Thank you so much for your email.
I ran the story in yesterday's edition about Rummy winning the award -- but your
email is a hoot.
I will post the pic you sent.
I love British humor or is it humour?
Thanks again.
Lisa

I wonder where Don Rumsfeld will display his trophy?

Dear Lisa:
See if you can guess who said these things-
"How fortunate for leaders that men do not think."
"Success is the sole earthly judge of right and wrong."
"The great masses of the people will more easily fall victims to a big lie than
to a small one."
"The victor will never be asked if he told the truth."
"Who says I am not under the special protection of God?"
"Without law and order our nation cannot survive."
Everyone is a quote from Adolf Hitler.

Thanks for writing Don. I thought it was John Ashcroft!
Bush Pardons Turkey at the last minute

"The White House announced that this year the president is going to pardon two turkeys this Thanksgiving. He didn't issue that many pardons when he was governor of Texas!" —Jay Leno

White House version of mid-air exchange disputed
Reuters, UK - 12-1-03
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - British Airways
says that none of its pilots made contact with President George W. Bush's plane
during its secret flight to Baghdad, contradicting White House reports of a
mid-air exchange that nearly prompted Bush to call off his trip...
My God, why lie? Habit, probably.
By the way, in the above graphic do you see a face or ____________?

"When Colin Powell gave his famous
speech to the U.N., he said -- and I quote -- 'Every statement I
make today is backed up by sources, solid sources. What we're giving you are the
facts and conclusions based on solid evidence' -- unquote. In this week's "New
Yorker" review of books, Thomas Powers takes a look back at that speech.
And here's what he found. Colin Powell made 29 specific claims about Iraq's
capabilities. Now that we've invaded Iraq, searched the country, guess how many
have been verified? Not a single one; 100 to 500 tons of chemical weapons
agents? Not found; 25,000 liters of anthrax? No. A few dozen Scud missiles? Try
again. Warheads containing biological war agents? The factory intending to
produce atomic bomb material doesn't seem to exist.
It turns out, the real turkey wasn't what George Bush served our troops on
Thursday."

108 nations decline to pursue terrorists
Washington Times, DC - 12-2-03
NEW YORK — A U.N. monitoring committee complained yesterday that 108 nations
have failed to file required reports on their actions in the war against
terrorism, such as freezing assets and reporting the names of suspected
terrorists...
"You're either with us or against us." - Dubya
I guess 108 nations are against us. Thanks Dubya for your uniting skills.

"I agree that he [Clinton] is brilliant. I believe his
native intelligence is equal to most." -Linda Tripp
WTF? Does she mean Clinton is brilliant or that he is as intelligent as most people? Liars can't keep their stories straight.
